In South Africa, care for older and vulnerable adults is delivered through home-based care, community care and residential care facilities such as old-age homes. These settings depend on home-based carers and care workers able to respond to an emergency, trained in first aid and CPR.

The first-aid requirement

Care workers and home-based carers are required by care-sector employers to hold basic first-aid training — CPR, bleeding, burns, fractures and shock — so that staff can act immediately for a resident. Basic first aid is a formal NQF Level 2 unit standard (SAQA US 12483) embedded in HWSETA home-based-care qualifications.

A recognized, up-to-date first-aid certificate — typically valid two to three years — is the way to meet this requirement; it is in addition to the carer's occupational training and must be renewed periodically.
