In health care, protecting the public begins with the ability to respond to an emergency. Whether you are a nurse or midwife registered with the South African Nursing Council or a home-based carer, current CPR and first-aid skills are part of what the role expects. Here is what the South African framework requires, and how recognized, up-to-date, documented training meets it.

In South Africa, nurses and midwives are regulated by the South African Nursing Council (SANC). The Nursing Act 2005 provides for continuing professional development, requiring practitioners to keep their competence current for the Annual Practising Certificate (APC).
Being able to resuscitate and manage emergencies is part of a nurse's professional duty of care. Basic Life Support is commonly a requirement of hospital and employer policy rather than a licence condition, and accredited BLS/PALS resuscitation courses count toward CPD — so documented, recognized training supports both.
The Nursing Act 2005 sets a minimum of 15 CPD points per year for nurses and midwives toward the Annual Practising Certificate (APC). Implementation is being phased in and is not yet linked to APC renewal as of 2025/2026, but accredited BLS/PALS resuscitation courses count toward these CPD points.

For support staff — home-based carers and care workers — first aid is embedded in HWSETA-accredited Home-Based Care (Ancillary Health Care) qualifications through the SAQA unit standard US 12483 'Perform Basic First Aid' (NQF Level 2, 5 credits: CPR, bleeding, burns, fractures, shock). This stand-alone, NQF-aligned certificate — valid for two to three years — is required by care-sector employers and must be renewed.
